How to restore a corrupt Windows XP registry

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
To restore the registry is relatively easy albeit drawn out, providing Windows Restore is enabled.
