What is my IP address?

While typing out another post, I figured I’d put in this very quick little post on obtaining your IP address for different operating systems.

Windows XP

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type in “cmd” (without the quotes)
  4. Press Enter
  5. When the little black box opens, type in “ipconfig” (again without the quotes)
  6. Your IP address will be displayed in the box

Windows Vista and Windows 7

  1. Click on Start
  2. Select the “Search Programs and Files” bar
  3. Type in “cmd” (without the quotes)
  4. Press Enter
  5. When the little black box opens, type in “ipconfig” (again without the quotes)
  6. Your IP address will be displayed in the box

Linux

  1. Login to linux via the console (if you aren’t at the console, press ALT+F2, or F3, or F4 etc… until you get to the console!)
  2. Type in “ifconfig” (without the quotes)
  3. Your IP address will be displayed

should you need to scroll up in the Linux console, hold down SHIFT and press PG UP

That should about do it for now, hope this helps!   If you know Macs well, please pop us a comment on how to check there!

And if you have a router, logging into the admin panel’s the best way to find out your external IP. Being behind a router on Windows means that ipconfig will return your LAN IP.

Purpose of this article was for finding out the IP addresses of internal machines on a LAN, but thank you for your contribution of whatsmyip!
