AOMID (Adult Onset Momentary Illiteracy Disorder), is a relatively common condition which manifests when a person is confronted with a software error message which is outside the normal scope of software package installation or use, and is often characterised by fervid calls to some form of production level support after being unable to decipher the simplest of error messages.

It most commonly affects members of the population who use computers for extended periods of time, with the worst cases being identified in junior field consultants, although it has been known to affect intermediate and advanced consultants as well depending on factors known as “work ethic” and “job satisfaction”. Unfortunately, in certain environments these two factors can lead to a third condition, known as PCT, or “premature career termination”, in which case AOMID is the least of the patient’s troubles.

There is no known cure for AOMID, however promotion to a position where no further internal escalation is possible has been known to reduce the symptoms of AOMID and force the sufferer to try and control the condition. Side-effects of this approach more often than not include chronic anxiety, various stress disorders and violent outbursts akin to Tourette’s Syndrome. The combination of these three conditions is often referred to by professionals as “next-tier support” (NTS).

Some of those afflicted by AOMID have claimed to have found a cure for this condition in the shape of something known as “Google”, however this has been widely regarded as an elaborate hoax due to the sheer volume of NTS cases being reported locally and abroad.

If you know someone affected by AOMID, please do not approach them as they are known to be incredibly volatile when confronted while in the throws of this condition. Trying to reason with the patient will only result in frustration, embarrassment, and possible onset of NTS.

If you know of a cure, or at least something to lessen the blow, or even a humorous anecdote regarding AOMID, please let us know via the contact form below. Your expedient response is appreciated, and will help in the fight to bring AOMID to a peaceful end.

I heard on the radio this morning that Gun Free SA is campaigning to have toy guns removed from store shelves over the December period, due to toy guns sending out a message to kids that it is ok to use a gun to get your way. An admirable step, in some peoples minds I’m sure.

The first thing that sprung to mind was “where are the parents?”. I grew up around toy guns, waterpistols, little plastic soldier figurines, and a working knowledge of ‘Capture-the-flag’ by the age of 6. I however, am not running around thinking its OK to point a gun at someone. I don’t even own a firearm. I have all the application forms, however I am still weighing up the pros and cons of owning a firearm (as I have been doing for 6 months now), because I do not in any way believe it is a decision to be taken lightly.

I used to be threatened with a serious hiding if I even pointed a toy gun at someone. That way I knew, you point a gun at someone, prepare to face serious consequences (a hiding at age 6 is a serious consequence, particularly when it is delivered by a spoon).

Then the next thing. Just for December. JUST, for December. So, following on from the first point, at any other time of the year, ie birthdays, play dates etc, its fine, kids will absolutely not get any ideas from playing with toy guns. I don’t know about you, but something sounds fishy here.

I reckon that this is blatant shock advertising for GFSA. Guns are bad. Safes are good. Parents teaching their kids to not shoot anyone to get their way, that’s right.

Leave the toy guns on the shelves. Rather educate the parents and the children. I can’t believe I’m going to say this line (because I disagree with the organisation that says it, with a completely opposite argument for another time), but…

Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.
